Finding Your Voice on Camera:

How Sports Psychology Transforms Digital Presence

Standing at the free-throw line with the game on the line can trigger an unmistakable physical response: an elevated heart rate, heightened awareness, muscle tension, and an inner voice questioning whether you are about to fail.

Clicking “Start Video” before facilitating an online training session or recording a piece of community media can produce surprisingly similar reactions.

On 24 September, we officially launched the 30-week EAC EMPOWER Impact Series with the  HATE-LESS Train-the-Trainer workshop, “Finding Your Voice & Presence.”

From the Court to the Camera: Three Sports Psychology Tools for Digital Presence

Our guest speaker, Dr. Brad Conn, Ph.D., introduced participants to practical sports psychology techniques drawn from his athlete mindset and performance frameworks, demonstrating how strategies used by athletes to manage pressure can also help facilitators, educators, and young leaders find their voice on camera.

We explored three concrete sport psychology tools designed to ground facilitators and young leaders when speaking on camera:

  1. Instructional Self-Talk: Swapping evaluative, spiral-inducing thoughts (“I sound stupid”) for direct action cues (“Slow breath. Eyes on the lens. Next sentence.”).
  2. The 10-Second Routine: Developing routines before speaking or any activity where inner resistance shows up. One routine for speaking on camera could be: 1) One 4-count breath in, 6-count out, 2) Posture reset (shoulders back, chin level), 3) One verbal cue (“Ready”, “Present”, “Go”).
  3. Process Over Scoreboard: Shifting from outcome anxiety (“What if they judge me?”) to the immediate rep in front of you (“What is my next sentence?”).

From Reflection to Action: The FLOW Video Challenge

Participants then reflected on these concepts and put them into practice by developing their own 30-second FLOW video script, following four steps:

– F – FACE: Acknowledge the fear, doubt, or inner Resistance holding us back.

– L – LET GO: Identify what helps us feel safe, supported, and prepared enough to begin.

– O – OWN: Take ownership and move forward, even when we do not feel completely ready.

– W – WELCOME: Create a safe space where we and others feel encouraged to speak, experiment, learn, and take action.

The Key Takeaway: Every Small Step Builds Momentum

Overcoming fear and self-doubt starts with letting go of judgment, embracing what we love, and finding the courage to take action – even when we don’t feel ready.

Every small step builds momentum, helping us own our presence, recognize our potential, and see challenges as opportunities for growth.

More love, less hate.
