Understanding the Foundations of Cybersecurity

When we browse the internet, sign in to an online account, or connect to a workplace network, security measures are working quietly in the background. We often take them for granted. How does a website know that you are really you? How can you trust that your browser is communicating with the correct server? Who determines which users have access to sensitive information?

These questions sit at the heart of modern cybersecurity. Building the Foundations of Digital Security

One of the free learning opportunities available through the SPECTRO Icarus platform is the course “Introduction to Computer and Network Security.” Designed for professionals and lifelong learners, the course provides a practical and accessible introduction to the principles that underpin secure digital environments.

Rather than focusing only on individual attacks or tools, the course explores the broader concepts that shape cybersecurity practices and decision-making.

Participants have the opportunity to explore topics such as:

  • The CIA triad (Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability), security policies, and risk management fundamentals.
  • Digital identity and authentication mechanisms, including concepts such as Single Sign-On (SSO).
  • The basics of cryptography, including public key cryptography and widely used protocols such as SSL/TLS.
  • Common web security vulnerabilities, phishing attempts, and social engineering techniques used by attackers.
  • Network defense mechanisms, including firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDS/IPS), Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) systems, Security Operations Centers (SOC), and honeypots.

The course consists of 23 lessons and 22 quizzes, is available free of charge, and includes a certificate upon completion, making it a valuable resource for anyone interested in strengthening their cybersecurity knowledge.
