When we hear the word “chip,” smartphones, computers, and other advanced digital technologies often come to mind first. But semiconductors are present in far more of the devices and systems we interact with every day.
This is the idea behind the latest #ChipChallenge from RESCHIP4EU. This week’s quiz asks participants to look at a selection of familiar devices and consider which would be least likely to work without semiconductors.
Semiconductors Beyond Computers
Semiconductor components can perform a wide range of functions, including processing information, sensing changes, controlling electronic operations, and enabling communication between different parts of a system. This means their role extends well beyond the technologies we typically associate with computing.
Looking at familiar objects from this perspective can help reveal just how deeply semiconductor technology has become integrated into modern life. It also provides an accessible starting point for understanding fields such as embedded systems and chip design, without requiring a technical background.
Learning Through the #ChipChallenge
The summer #ChipChallenge series is designed to introduce these topics through short, curiosity-driven questions. Rather than testing specialist engineering knowledge, each quiz encourages participants to think about the technology around them and discover something new along the way.
The correct answers will be revealed in the summer edition of Inside RESCHIP4EU, together with explanations and additional resources for readers who want to explore the topics further.
As partners, Evolutionary Archetypes Consulting SL and 28DIGITAL are following the summer challenge and looking forward to seeing how participants approach each question.
For now, we won’t give this week’s answer away. Head over to the LinkedIn page of RESCHIP4EU – Reinforcing Skills in Chips Design for Europe to take part in the latest #ChipChallenge, cast your vote, and see how well you know the technology hiding in everyday life.
