In today’s digital landscape, young people navigate complex online environments where hate speech, racism, and disinformation can spread rapidly. To help youth workers, educators, and trainers address these challenges, the HATE-LESS Results page brings together a collection of comprehensive open-access educational materials.
The materials combine media literacy, participatory research, creative storytelling, video production, and reflective learning. Rather than treating young people as passive recipients of information, they support them in becoming critical thinkers, storytellers and active co-creators of more inclusive digital spaces.

Overview of the HATE-LESS Resources
1. Methodological Guidelines for Participatory Actions
The Methodological Guidelines serve as an extensive resource for youth workers seeking to implement technology-enhanced participatory practices. The publication is structured into six core chapters covering the entire lifecycle of participatory youth work:
- Chapter 1: Participatory Approaches in Youth Work: Introduces co-creation, collaboration, inclusion, and practical applications of youth-led media work.
- Chapter 2: Why Deconstructing Hate Speech and Disinformation Matter: Covers core concepts, intersections, and practical reflective tools to counter biased narratives.
- Chapter 3: How to Do Participatory Research with Youth: Provides step-by-step guidance on Participatory Action Research (PAR), ethics, power sharing, informed consent, and safeguarding.
- Chapter 4: Innovative Practices and Digital Tools: Explores inclusive storytelling methods, including storyboards, autoethnography, soundscapes, and digital tools for accessibility.
- Chapter 5: Technical Guide for the Creation of a Participatory Video: A practical guide detailing storytelling techniques, camera work, sound, lighting, interview ethics, and basic video editing.
- Chapter 6: Facilitating Learning: From Guidelines to Training: Focuses on capacity building for youth workers as multipliers, training implementation, and follow-up strategies.
2. HATE-LESS Training Toolkit
Designed for direct experiential learning, the toolkit offers modular activities structured around six key themes:
- Module 1: Understanding participants, European values, and code of conduct.
- Module 2: Emotional algorithms: How social media shapes feelings and radicalisation.
- Module 3: The research and exploration phase (hands-on activities such as soundscape mapping, photovoice, and participatory interviews).
- Module 4: Foundations of participatory action.
- Module 5: Technical guide for the creation of a participatory video (covering sound, visuals, consent, and social media tracking).
- Module 6: Learning from reflection (interactive tools and evaluation activities).
Through these modules, participants strengthen their media literacy, critical thinking, empathy, creativity, and ability to develop constructive counter-narratives.

3. HATE-LESS Repository of Participatory Impact Monitoring Tools
The Repository of Participatory Impact Monitoring Tools supports youth workers, trainers and project partners in evaluating the outcomes of participatory education and media activities.
It contains 15 qualitative and quantitative tools designed to assess changes in areas such as media literacy, critical thinking, civic engagement, skills development and participants’ attitudes. The collection includes participatory approaches based on storytelling, interviews, reflection, self-assessment and collaborative evaluation.
By involving young people and youth workers as contributors to the evaluation process, the repository helps facilitators document learning, understand the effects of their activities and use the findings to improve future training.
4. Train the Trainer Handouts – Spain Edition
The Spain edition brings together 12 reusable handouts developed through four HATE-LESS Train-the-Trainer workshops. The resources can be delivered as a progressive four-session training programme or adapted individually according to the needs, experience and available time of each group.
Each session includes a facilitator learning path or journey, an energiser and a participatory main activity:
- Workshop 1 – Storytelling Through Space: Helps participants understand how locations, light, objects, framing and atmosphere can contribute to visual storytelling.
- Workshop 2 – Voices from the Margins: Explores ethical interview-based storytelling, careful listening, informed consent and respectful representation.
- Workshop 3 – Emotional Narratives and Media Influence: Examines how online content and algorithms can trigger emotional reactions and influence what people engage with and amplify.
- Workshop 4 – Creating Counter-Narrative Videos: Guides participants in transforming harmful online patterns into constructive alternative messages grounded in dignity, truth, empathy and inclusion.
Empowering Youth-Led Expression
The HATE-LESS materials move beyond theoretical descriptions of hate speech and disinformation by providing practical ways to respond. Through participatory research, media analysis, interviews, soundscapes, storytelling and video creation, young people are encouraged to examine the narratives they encounter and consider how those narratives influence emotions, attitudes and behaviour.
Youth workers and educators can use the resources to create safer learning environments in which young people are heard, their choices are respected, and their experiences inform the learning process. Participants can then use their own voices and creative skills to develop positive counter-narratives, challenge harmful representations and contribute to more inclusive and resilient communities.
