Shaping the Next Phase of Ecological Transition Education: The ECOLUTION Consortium Meets in Bilbao

Delivering an ambitious, transnational Master’s programme requires deep coordination, regular pedagogical alignment, and close collaboration between academia and industry.

On 14-15 October 2026, representatives from across the ECOLUTION consortium travelled to the Basque Country for a two-day face-to-face project meeting hosted by Politeknika Txorierri in Derio (Bilbao, Spain).

The meeting provided an essential forum to assess project delivery, review student progress, and take concrete steps to scale Europe’s capacity for circular economy and sustainability education.

Key Discussion Areas & Outcomes

1. 2026/27 Teaching and Academic Planning

The meeting opened with a comprehensive review of the upcoming teaching cycle. Partners reviewed student enrolment numbers, scheduling across the multi-campus delivery structure, and the integration of digital modules on Moodle. Special attention was dedicated to course evaluation frameworks, ECQA examination procedures, and establishing clear roadmaps for state examinations and graduation.

2. Rolling Out Green Microcredentials

Recognising the growing demand for rapid upskilling among working professionals, partners advanced the implementation of ECOLUTION microcredentials. Discussions focused on establishing transparent assessment frameworks, formal recognition mechanisms, and validation standards that allow individual course modules in ecological transition to be delivered as flexible, stackable qualifications.

3. Student Mobilities, Theses, and Industry Placements

A core strength of the ECOLUTION Master’s programme is its real-world industrial relevance. During the Day 2 sessions, consortium partners examined the lessons learned from initial student cohorts and established guidelines to widen external placements. The updated framework will connect Master’s students with top environmental engineering firms, circular manufacturing facilities, and research institutes across Europe.

4. Touring Politeknika Txorierri’s Technical Facilities

Between working sessions, the host team guided partners through Politeknika Txorierri’s technical training halls and applied technology facilities, offering direct insight into the school’s vocational excellence and industry-integrated learning spaces.

5. “Beyond ECOLUTION”: Securing a Permanent Joint Degree

Looking past the duration of the EU grant, the consortium dedicated a session to long-term sustainability. Partners outlined viable financing models and began formal planning to transition the current programme into an integrated, permanent European joint or multiple degree.

6. Looking Ahead to Malta

The administration and quality assurance session concluded with an overview of remaining reporting deadlines, key performance indicators, and preparations for the upcoming student mobility experience in Thessaloniki, Greece, and the project’s final closing meeting to be hosted in Malta by AquaBioTech Ltd (ABT).

A Sincere Thank You to Our Hosts

The ECOLUTION consortium extends its warmest gratitude to the leadership and staff at Politeknika Txorierri for their exceptional hospitality, organisation, and support throughout the two days in Bizkaia.
