Creating Focus & Digital Peace: Our CALM Virtual Exchange

How many browser tabs, notifications, and unfinished tasks are competing for your attention right now?

On October 1, 2026, we explored practical ways to create focus and digital peace during the EAC EMPOWER Impact Series Virtual Exchange. Session 2, Creating Focus & Digital Peace, was a virtual exchange held in collaboration with the DigiCreate project.

Trainers, youth workers, youth leaders, and young creative professionals came together to share experiences. We explored how to manage digital distractions and create supportive digital spaces.

The session began with a grounding visualization. Drawing on Steven Pressfield’s The War of Art, we then discussed how distraction, procrastination, and self-doubt can interrupt meaningful work.

Three Strategies for Digital Peace

Participants practiced and exchanged ideas about three strategies introduced by Dr. Brad Conn in Session 1:

  1. Constructive self-talk: Replace evaluative thoughts such as “Will people judge me?” with an action-focused question: “What idea do I want to express?”
  2. Supportive routines: Clear your digital workspace, set aside time to focus, and use familiar rituals to help you begin.
  3. Process focus: Give your attention to the next useful action instead of worrying about likes or final results.

Participants shared experiences of fearing judgment and comparing themselves with others professionally. Together, we explored how these strategies could help in everyday situations.

Turning Reflection into CALM Guides

Next, participants used digital tools to create visual guides, audio narratives, or stories based on the CALM framework:

  • 🔎 CATCH the distraction or unhelpful thought.
  • 💬 ADJUST it into constructive self-talk.
  • 🛡️ LIMIT interruptions through routines and boundaries
  • 👣 MOVE toward the next meaningful step – one step at a time.

A central takeaway emerged: we can protect our attention by returning to the purpose of our work and choosing one manageable action.

Take a look at the accompanying image for a preview of participants’ visual guides. We’ll share the full collection of audio narratives, stories, and visual guides after Learning Cycle 1: Safe Space virtual exchanges.

Thank You to Our Participants and Team

Thank you to our participants for sharing their experiences and creating resources to support others, to our trainers and facilitation team, and to Dr. Brad Conn for the strategies that informed our practice.
