Creating an Extended Reality (XR) experience involves more than making sure the technology works. An immersive environment also needs to consider the people using it: how they perceive and navigate digital spaces, how they interact with what they see, and whether the experience responds to their needs.
This combination of technology, design, and human interaction is the focus of the latest Summer Quiz question from ARISE.
This week, participants are being asked why XR projects often involve experts from different disciplines. The question reflects an important aspect of immersive technology: developing an XR experience can require different perspectives to come together around the same challenge.
Looking Beyond the Technology
Technical development is one part of creating an immersive experience, but the way people experience that technology also matters. Design decisions can influence how users move through an environment, understand information, and interact with digital elements.
Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) provides another important perspective by focusing attention on the relationship between people and the systems they use. When developing XR, considering human perception, interaction, design, and technical requirements together can help teams think more carefully about the experience they are creating.
This is why interdisciplinary thinking is particularly relevant to the fields explored through ARISE, which focuses on Human–Computer Interaction, Design, and Extended Reality. The latest quiz question offers a simple way to introduce this relationship to a wider audience without requiring specialist knowledge.
Take the ARISE Summer Quiz
The Summer Quiz is designed to make topics related to HCI and XR accessible through short, curiosity-driven questions. Each question gives participants an opportunity to test what they know and explore a different aspect of immersive technologies.
