Extended Reality (XR) is often associated with gaming and entertainment, but its applications are not limited to either. Immersive technologies are already supporting professionals in different sectors as they learn, design, plan, and approach complex challenges.
That is the focus of the latest Summer Quiz question from ARISE: Which of these careers is most likely to use XR today?
The options might seem very different at first: surgeon, architect, or engineer. But the question encourages participants to look beyond the most familiar associations with XR and consider where immersive technologies are already finding practical applications in professional settings.
Looking Beyond Entertainment
The way XR is used can vary considerably depending on the professional context. In healthcare, immersive environments can support training and simulation (Source).
Architects can use immersive technologies to experience and examine spaces in new ways, while engineers can apply them when working with designs and technical environments (Source).
These examples help illustrate why XR involves much more than creating virtual worlds for entertainment. The technology can provide professionals with different ways to interact with information, practise tasks, visualise ideas, and explore scenarios.
Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is also closely connected to these applications. As immersive technologies enter different professional environments, understanding how people interact with digital systems becomes an important part of designing experiences that respond to their users and intended context.
Connecting XR Skills with ARISE
These questions are directly relevant to the areas explored within ARISE, which focuses on Human–Computer Interaction, Design, and Extended Reality.
The Summer Quiz provides a simple way to introduce these subjects to a wider audience. Rather than requiring specialist knowledge, each question takes a familiar idea about immersive technology and encourages participants to consider how XR and HCI relate to the world around them.
Evolutionary Archetypes Consulting SL and 28DIGITAL, partners in ARISE, are joining the quiz again this week and inviting our community to take part.
⇒ So, who do you think is most likely to use XR today: a surgeon, an architect, or an engineer?
