ARISE: What UN Open Source Week Means for Digital Education
July 9, 2026 EA Editor

This year’s UN Open Source Week (June 22-26) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York brought together representatives from governments, international organisations, academia, industry, and the open-source community to discuss how collaboration, transparency, and shared knowledge can support global digital development.

Among those attending was Chris Haberl, CEO of Evolutionary Archetypes Consulting SL, who joined conversations exploring how open collaboration can contribute to more resilient and sustainable digital ecosystems.

While ARISE is not an open-source initiative, many of the themes discussed during the event closely align with the project’s educational approach. Preparing learners for careers in Extended Reality (XR), Human–Computer Interaction, and immersive technologies requires collaboration between universities, researchers, industry partners, and students across Europe.

One of the recurring messages throughout UN Open Source Week was the importance of sharing knowledge and building solutions through cooperation rather than working in isolation. In higher education, this principle is reflected in partnerships that bring together different areas of expertise to create learning opportunities that respond to rapidly evolving technological fields.

This collaborative model is central to ARISE. By connecting higher education institutions and project partners across Europe, the program supports the development of advanced digital skills while encouraging interdisciplinary learning and international cooperation. Learners benefit from perspectives that combine technology, design, and Human-Computer Interaction, preparing them to work in environments where collaboration across disciplines and borders is increasingly common.

Partners such as Evolutionary Archetypes Consulting SL and 28DIGITAL contribute to this shared effort by supporting educational pathways that reflect both academic expertise and emerging industry needs. Bringing together diverse knowledge and experience helps strengthen learning opportunities and supports the development of future professionals in XR and related digital fields.

Events such as UN Open Source Week highlight that technological progress is not driven solely by new tools, but also by the ways people work together, exchange ideas, and build knowledge collectively. As Europe continues investing in advanced digital skills, these conversations provide valuable perspectives on how collaboration can strengthen education and help prepare the next generation of innovators.
