From Azulejos to Algorithms: How Portugal Is Reimagining Creativity in the Digital Age
When you think of European tech hubs, Portugal is usually at the top of the list. However, what makes the Portuguese Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI) truly unique is not the raw volume of active startups. It is the seamless way the country merges centuries-old artistic traditions with cutting-edge digital frameworks. True innovation in Portugal does not mean erasing history; it means upgrading it.
Braga: A Hub for Media Arts
A standout example of this digital transition is Braga. Rather than abandoning its historical roots, Braga has integrated technology directly into its cultural identity. The city has been officially recognised as a UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts since 2017. By placing creativity at the heart of its social development, Braga serves as a global blueprint for how experimental art, technology, and digital participation can coexist.
Caldas da Rainha: Reinventing Traditional Crafts
Innovation in Portugal extends far beyond major metropolitan centres. Located on the west coast, Caldas da Rainha is a city of 60,000 inhabitants that has historically been an important centre for ceramic production.
Today, it leverages that heritage in the modern economy. Caldas da Rainha is recognised on the global stage as a UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Arts. The local ecosystem proves that traditional artistic knowledge can directly inspire and sustain contemporary, digitally empowered creative businesses.
Empowering Creators with Contextos
To support this dynamic creative landscape, the DigiCreate project actively collaborates with Contextos, our dedicated Portuguese partner. Contextos works to ensure that local artists, designers, and cultural workers have access to the digital upskilling necessary to thrive in a hybrid market.
Through initiatives like the Digital Hive Toolbox, we provide the practical resources needed to help the Portuguese CCI sector continue its impressive growth.
